FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL

OUR THEME FOR 2017
(Part 35)

ALERT AND SOBER

September 5, 2017
Today’s reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Per our theme of ONE in Christ, such unity happens as we all pursue holiness, servanthood and being warriors.

To be holy is to be set apart. It is to be different from the world. It is to live the light of Christ rather than dwell in the darkness of sin. “For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness.” (v.5). This distinguishes those who are children of God from those who are children of the evil one.

To be servants is to serve the Master. We are all co-workers in Christ. We are not here for ourselves but only for God and His Church. “Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you do.” (v.11). We are in this together. We have the one vision and mission. We are one body. We are co-dependents. We look to the good of each other, even before our own. We encourage each other as we all endure and persevere, suffering together through the pains of ministry.

To be warriors is to be mindful of the necessary work of evangelization, and to adapt ourselves wholeheartedly to this task. The most important work of the Church is mission, to bring many more to salvation in Christ. “For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ” (v.9). Jesus “died for us” (v.10a) and won for us our salvation. This is the only means of being restored to the Father, and of making it to our eternal reward in heaven, so that “we may live together with him.” (v.10c).

As we strive to be one in Christ, so that we may accomplish the purposes of God in our lives, we look to the three theological virtues that need to develop in us—faith, hope and charity. These are the needed equipment of holy warriors. We put “on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet that is hope for salvation.” (v.8b).

There is much work to be done. “Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober.” (v.6). Ho-wa!

WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO

Through all of our 29 years, we have spoken much of our vision and mission, who we are, what we are called to do. We know that we are an evangelistic and missionary community. This has been true from the very beginning and has never changed. We do our work within the context of family renewal. That is one distinct factor that distinguishes us from other renewal movements.

Books and Magazines

The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The Eucharist is the greatest gift God gives to His people. The Eucharist is our path to holiness and Christian perfection. The Eucharist is crucial to our work of the New Evangelization. We must have greater understanding and appreciation of the Eucharist, so that we can go forth and truly be effective witnesses to salvation in Jesus.

Servant leadership is crucial to our work of building up community and of doing a massive work of evangelization. Unfortunately, many who are leaders in our Church today may not have the heart of a servant. But Jesus, our Lord and Master, came not to be served but to serve. He is our main model.
